Human Umbilical Cord Blood Cells Found to Enhance Survival and Maturation of Key Brain Cells
In vitro studies examining the activity of human umbilical cord blood cells (HUCB) on experimental models of central nervous system aging, injury and disease, have shown that HUCBs provide a trophic effect that enhances survival and maturation of hippocampal neurons harvested from both young and old laboratory animals. Human and Rhesus Macaque Hematopoietic Stem Cells Cannot Be Purified Based Only Upon SLAM Family Markers
Researchers isolated Signaling Lymphocyte Activation Molecule (SLAM) (CD150+CD48-) and non-SLAM (not CD150+CD48-) cells from human umbilical cord blood CD34+ cells as well as from human and rhesus macaque mobilized peripheral blood CD34+ cells and compared their ability to form colonies in vitro and reconstitute immune-deficient (NOD/SCID/(gamma)cnull, NSG) mice. [Blood]

Mesenchymal Stem Cells Secreting Angiopoietin-Like-5 Support Efficient Expansion of Human Hematopoietic Stem Cells Without Compromising Their Repopulating Potential
Researchers report a robust hematopoietic stem cell co-culture system wherein cord blood CD34+ CD133+ cells were co-cultured with mesenchymal stem cells engineered to express angiopoietin like-5 in a defined media. [Stem Cells Dev]

The Effect of Obesity on Outcome of Unrelated Cord Blood Transplant in Children with Malignant Diseases
Researchers sought to determine the effect of obesity among 200 children who were prospectively enrolled on a multicenter cord blood transplant trial. [Bone Marrow Transplant]

Expansion of CD4(+)CD25(+) Regulatory T Cells from Cord Blood CD4(+) Cells Using the Common Gamma-Chain Cytokines (IL-2 and IL-15) and Rapamycin
Researchers tried to expand CD4(+)CD25(+) regulatory T cells from umbilical cord blood CD4-positive cells using interleukin (IL)-15 or IL-2 with transforming growth factor-beta and rapamycin. [Ann Hematol]

Human Umbilical Cord Blood Cells Have Trophic Effects on Young and Aging Hippocampal Neurons In Vitro
The aim of this study was to examine whether the human umbilical cord blood cells produce trophic factors that may enhance survival and maturation of hippocampal neurons in an in vitro test system. [Aging Dis]

Are Globoseries Glycosphingolipids SSEA-3 and -4 Markers for Stem Cells Derived from Human Umbilical Cord Blood?
Findings indicate that SSEA-3 and/or -4 may not be optimal markers for multipotency in the case of stem cells derived from cord blood, as their expression may be altered by cell-culture conditions. [J Mol Cell Biol]
