Functional Characterization of TPO-Expanded CD34+ Cord Blood Cells Identifies CD34CD61 Cells as Platelet Producing Cells Early after Transplantation in NOD/SCID Mice and rCD34+ Cells as CAFC Colony Forming Cells
It is unknown which sub-populations of TPO expanded cord blood CD34+ cells mediate accelerated platelet recovery and bone marrow (BM) engraftment. In this study, the contribution of these sub-populations to human platelet appearance in the blood and BM engraftment was studied in NOD/SCID mice. [Stem Cells] Abstract

An Acute Negative Bystander Effect of γ-Irradiated Recipients on Transplanted Hematopoietic Stem Cells in Mice
In this study, researchers found that irradiated mouse recipients significantly impaired the long-term repopulating ability of transplanted mouse hematopoietic stem cells shortly (~17 hours) after exposure to irradiated hosts and before the cells began to divide. [Blood] Abstract

Umbilical Cord Stem Cells Released from Alginate-Fibrin Microbeads Inside Macroporous and Biofunctionalized Calcium Phosphate Cement for Bone Regeneration
The objectives of this study were to develop a novel biofunctionalized and macroporous calcium phosphate cement (CPC) containing alginate-fibrin microbeads encapsulating human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUCMSCs) and investigate hUCMSC proliferation and osteogenic differentiation inside CPC for the first time. [Acta Biomater] Abstract

Reconstruction of Hematopoietic Inductive Microenvironment after Transplantation of Vascular Cell Adhesion Molecule-1-Modified Human Umbilical Cord Blood Stromal Cells
In this study, researchers first established a co-culture system of human cord blood-derived stromal cells (HUCBSCs) and cord blood CD34+ cells and then determined that using HUCBSCs as the adherent layer had significantly more newly formed colonies of each hematopoietic lineage than the control group, indicating that HUCBSCs had the ability to promote the proliferation of hematopoietic stem cells/progenitor cells. [PLoS One] Abstract

Cooperation of Epac1/Ras-Related Protein 1/Akt and PKA in Prostaglandin E2-Induced Proliferation of Human Umbilical Cord Blood Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells: Involvement of c-Myc and Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Expression
Researchers investigated the relationship between the exchange protein directly activated by cAMP (Epac1) and protein kinase A (PKA) during prostaglandin E2-induced human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells proliferation and its related signaling pathways. [J Cell Physiol] Abstract

Enhanced Humoral and HLA-A2-Restricted Dengue Virus-Specific T Cell Responses in Humanized BLT NSG Mice
Researchers recently described an animal model for dengue virus (DENV) infection using humanized NOD-scid IL2rγnull mice (NSG) engrafted with cord blood hematopoietic stem cells. The researchers sought to further improve this model by co-transplantation of human fetal thymus and liver tissues into NSG (BLT-NSG) mice. [Immunology] Abstract

Clostridium difficile Infection after Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation: Incidence, Risk Factors and Outcome
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the incidence, risk factors and outcome of C. difficile infection after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. [Biol Blood Marrow Transplant] Abstract

Single-Cell Level Analysis of Megakaryocyte Growth and Development
Herein, long-term and large-field live cell imaging was used to study the process of megakaryopoiesis at the single cell level from human CD34+ cord blood in the presence of thrombopoietin or the cytokine cocktail BS1 with or without nicotinamide. [Differentiation] Abstract

The Impact of Hyaluronan on Monocyte Toll-Like Receptor Expression in Term Infant Cord Blood
The aim of this study was explore the possible effects of hyaluronan on monocyte surface expression of Toll-like receptor 2 and -4 in human umbilical cord blood ex vivo, and in a model mimicking Gram-negative neonatal sepsis. [Acta Paediatr] Abstract
