Transmaternal Cell Flow Leads to Antigen Experienced Cord Blood
Researchers questioned whether solely transmaternal cell flow may immunize umbilical cord blood (UCB). Hereto, 23 female UCB samples were collected from healthy mothers and analyzed for minor Histocompatibility antigen HY-specific responses. [Blood] Abstract

Inhibitory Receptors Bind ANGPTLs and Support Blood Stem Cells and Leukemia Development
Researchers showed that the immune-inhibitory receptor human leukocyte immunoglobulin-like receptor B2 (LILRB2) and its mouse orthologue paired immunoglobulin-like receptor (PIRB) are receptors for several angiopoietin-like proteins (ANGPTLs). LILRB2 and PIRB are expressed on human and mouse hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), respectively, and the binding of ANGPTLs to these receptors supported ex vivo expansion of HSCs. [Nature] Abstract

Use of Human Umbilical Cord Blood Mononuclear Cells to Prevent Perinatal Brain Injury: A Pre-Clinical Study
Scientists investigated the potential of human umbilical cord blood mononuclear cells to prevent or repair brain lesions in an animal model of excitotoxic brain injury. [Stem Cells Dev] Abstract

Suppression of Erythroid Development In Vitro by Plasmodium vivax
To better understand the role of Plasmodium vivax infection in anemia, the inhibition of erythropoiesis using hematopoietic stem cells was investigated. Hematopoietic stem cells/CD34+ cells, isolated from normal human cord blood were used to generate growing erythroid cells. [Malar J] Abstract

HHV-6 Reactivation and Associated Sequelae after Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation
Scientists found that human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) reactivation was independently and quantitatively associated with increased risk of subsequent cytomegalovirus reactivation, acute graft-versus-host-disease, and mortality after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation. [Biol Blood Marrow Transplant] Abstract

Melatonin Inhibits IL-1β-Induced MMP-9 Expression and Activity in Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells via Suppressing Nuclear Factor-κB Activation
Researchers investigated the protective effect of melatonin in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) monolayer permeability and the regulation of matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) induced by IL-1β in HUVECs. [J Endocrinol] Abstract

Angptl4 Maintains In Vivo Repopulation Capacity of CD34+ Human Cord Blood Cells
Human CD34+ cells from cord blood were cultured in vitro for eleven or eight days in the presence or absence of Angiopoietin-like (Angptl) growth factors. The reconstitution capacity of expanded cells was subsequently measured in vivo by transplantation into NOD-SCID or NSG mice, and compared to that of uncultured cells. [Eur J Haematol] Abstract

Effect of Preeclampsia and Intrauterine Growth Restriction on Endothelial Progenitor Cells in Human Umbilical Cord Blood
The authors evaluated the influence of prematurity, preeclampsia and intrauterine growth restriction on the endothelial progenitor cell population in human umbilical cord blood. [J Matern Fetal Neonatal Med] Abstract

Susceptibility of Cord Blood Antioxidant Enzymes Glutathione Reductase, Glutathione Peroxidase and Glutathione S-Transferase to Different Antibiotics: In Vitro Approach
Researchers purified human cord blood glutathione reductase, glutathione S-transferase and human cord blood glutathione peroxidase from human cord blood erythrocytes and analyzed the inhibition effects of the antibiotics incorporating cefuroxime, ceftriaxone, ceftizoxime and cefoperazone, on these enzymes. [J Enzyme Inhib Med Chem] Abstract
