Intercellular Cytosolic Transfer Correlates with Mesenchymal Stromal Cell Rescue of Umbilical Cord Blood Cell Viability during Ex Vivo Expansion
Data suggest that intercellular transfer of cytosolic materials could be one novel mechanism for preventing umbilical cord blood cell death in mesenchymal stromal cell co-culture. [Cytotherapy] Abstract

A Quantitative Proteomic and Transcriptomic Comparison of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells from Bone Marrow and Umbilical Cord Vein
Total protein extracts of bone marrow-human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) and umbilical cord vein-hMSCs were quantitatively compared using gel-LC-MS/MS. [Proteomics] Abstract

A Novel Automated Bioreactor for Scalable Process Optimization of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Culture
Investigators demonstrated the potential of a new, automated, 24 × 15 mL replicate suspension bioreactor system, with online monitoring and control, to develop an hematopoietic stem cell proliferation and differentiation process for erythroid committed cells. [J Biotechnol] Abstract

MicroRNAs Can Increase the Efficiency of Ex Vivo Platelet Generation
Researchers derived a highly efficient differentiation protocol to produce mature polyploid megakaryocytes and functional platelets from CD34+-hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells by comparing previously published approaches. The potency of this novel megakaryocytic differentiation protocol was validated using cord blood and peripheral blood human hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells. [Ann Hematol] Abstract

Dynamic Expression of Specific miRNAs during Erythroid Differentiation of Human Embryonic Stem Cells
Scientists aimed to identify erythroid lineage-specific microRNAs (miRNAs) expressed during in vitro erythropoiesis using human embryonic stem cells and human umbilical cord blood CD34+ cells. [Mol Cells] Abstract

Isolation and Characterization of Mesenchymal Stem Cells from Whole Human Umbilical Cord Applying a Single Enzyme Approach
Researchers showed that human umbilical cord-mesenchymal stem cells were easily isolated by a single enzymatic digestion and characteristic of plastic adherence and fibroblast-like morphology. [Cell Biochem Funct] Abstract

Genetic Regulation on Ex Vivo Differentiated Natural Killer Cells from Human Umbilical Cord Blood CD34+ Cells
Investigators performed an extended analysis of transcription factors during in vitro differentiation of natural killer cells. [J Recept Signal Transduct Res] Abstract

Co-Culture of Vascular Endothelial Cells and Adipose-Derived Stem Cells as a Source for Bone Engineering
The authors examined the influence of co-culturing vascular endothelial cells (VECs) and adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) on osteogenic differentiation. Cord blood-derived VECs and ADSCs were isolated from rats and characterized with immunofluorescence staining and morphological observation. [Ann Plast Surg] Abstract

In Vivo Differentiation of Human Amniotic Epithelial Cells into Cardiomyocyte-Like Cells and Cell Transplantation Effect on Myocardial Infarction in Rats: Comparison with Cord Blood and Adipose Tissue-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Researchers assessed whether human amniotic epithelial cells (h-AECs) could differentiate into cardiomyocytes in vivo and whether h-AECs transplantation can decrease infarct size and improve cardiac function, in comparison to transplantation of cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) or adipose tissue-derived MSCs. [Cell Transplant] Abstract
