Researchers directly compared the capacity of human embryonic stem cell-derived endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) and human cord blood-derived EPCs to benefit wound healing. [Biomaterials] Abstract

Human Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stem Cells as Vehicles of CD20-Specific TRAIL Fusion Protein Delivery: A Double-Target Therapy against Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
Investigators designed a promising double-target therapeutic system for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma therapy. The system is based on mesenchymal stem cell homing capacity and scFvCD20 antigen-restriction to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. In this system, a novel secreted fusion protein scFvCD20-sTRAIL, which contains a CD20-specific single chain Fv antibody fragment (scFv) and a soluble tumor necrosis factor related apoptosis-inducing ligand (sTRAIL) with an isoleucine zipper was added to the N-terminal, was expressed in human umbilical cord derived mesenchymal stem cells. Role of Transcriptional Corepressor ETO2 in Erythroid Cells
To elucidate the role of ETO2 during erythroid differentiation, including the impact of ETO2 on GATA-1 targets, scientists performed gene expression profiling using K562 cells overexpressed with ETO2. They also evaluated the role of ETO2 in human primary erythroblasts, derived from cord blood CD34-positive cells. [Exp Hematol] Abstract

Staphylococcus aureus Infection of Intestinal Epithelial Cells Induces Human Umbilical Cord-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cell Migration
Researchers explored the mechanisms of mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) recruitment to intestinal epithelial cells infected with Staphylococcus aureus. First, researchers isolated and characterized the umbilical cord blood (UCB)-derived MSCs used in the experiments. Next, they determined the ability of S. aureus infected intestinal epithelial cells to induce migration of UCB-derived MSCs. [Int Immunopharmacol] Abstract

The Ex Vivo Induction of Human CD103+ CD25hi Foxp3+ CD4+ and CD8+ Tregs Is IL-2 and TGF-β1 Dependent
This study provides new insights into the regulatory role of IL-2 upon CD103 expression by human cord blood CD4+ and CD8+ T cells. Furthermore, it identifies the in vitro culture conditions driving the differentiation of the novel phenotype CD4+ and CD8+ CD103+ CD25hi Foxp3+ Tregs from human cord blood mononuclear cells. Tailoring of Processing Parameters for Sintering Microsphere-Based Scaffolds with Dense-Phase Carbon Dioxide
Researchers previously introduced subcritical CO2 as a sintering method for microsphere-based scaffolds; here they further explored the effect of processing parameters. Human umbilical cord mesenchymal stromal cells seeded on the scaffolds demonstrated that cells penetrate the scaffolds and remain viable. [J Biomed Mater Res B Appl Biomater] Abstract

Metabolically Functional Hepatocyte-Like Cells from Human Umbilical Cord Lining Epithelial Cells
The authors aimed to isolate multipotent epithelial cells from the umbilical cord, differentiate these cells into hepatocyte-like cells, and investigate the potential of using the differentiated cells for in vitro drug metabolism models. Human umbilical cord lining epithelial cells were subjected to hepatic induction over a period of 28 days. [Assay Drug Dev Technol] Abstract

Feasibility of Delivering Mesenchymal Stem Cells via Catheter to the Proximal End of Lesion Artery in Patients with Stroke in the Territory of Middle Cerebral Artery
Researchers evaluated the safety and efficacy of umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells delivered by catheter to a near lesion site for treatment of an infarction in the middle cerebral artery territory. [Cell Transplant] Abstract
