Lead Exposure Induces Changes in 5-Hydroxymethylcytosine Clusters in CpG Islands in Human Embryonic Stem Cells and Umbilical Cord Blood
Scientists randomly selected umbilical cord blood from 24 male and 24 female children from the 1st and 4th quartiles of lead (Pb) levels. They showed that Pb-associated changes in the 5-hydroxymethylcytosine and DNA methylation profiles can be divided into sex-dependent and sex-independent categories. [Epigenetics] Abstract

Outcomes of Acute Leukemia Patients Transplanted with Naive T Cell-Depleted Stem Cell Grafts
Researchers hypothesized that selective depletion of naive T cells from human allogeneic peripheral blood stem cell grafts would reduce graft-versus-host disease and provide sufficient numbers of hematopoietic stem cells and memory T cells to permit hematopoietic engraftment and the transfer of pathogen-specific T cells from donor to recipient, respectively. Antioxidant Treatment Enhances Human Mesenchymal Stem Cell Anti-Stress Ability and Therapeutic Efficacy in an Acute Liver Failure Model
Researchers demonstrated the pivotal role of antioxidant levels in human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells dynamic in vitro anti-stress abilities against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)/H2O2 intoxication and in vivo therapeutic efficacy in a murine acute liver failure model induced by D-galactosamine/LPS by either reducing the antioxidant levels with diethyl maleate or increasing antioxidant levels with edaravone. [Sci Rep] Full Article

Characterization of HLA-G and Related Immunosuppressive Effects in Human Umbilical Cord Stroma Derived Stem Cells
Scientists explored the immunosuppressive properties of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (HUCMSCs). They found that HLA-G was much more expressed on the HUCMSCs than mesenchymal stem cells of other origins. [Cell Transplant] Abstract

High Concentrations of TNF-α Induce Cell Death during Interactions between Human Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stem Cells and Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells
The authors explored the role of TNF-α in the interactions between human umbilical cord mesenchymal stromal cells and peripheral blood mononuclear cells. [PLoS One] Full Article

Quantitative Characterization of T-Cell Repertoire in Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant Recipients
Investigators characterized the T repertoire in patients who underwent matched donor or haplo-cord hematopoietic stem cell transplantation using next-generation sequencing approach. [Bone Marrow Transplant] Abstract

Altered Expression of MicroRNAs in the Neuronal Differentiation of Human Wharton’s Jelly Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Researchers isolated mesenchymal stem cells from the Wharton’s jelly of the human umbilical cord (WJ-MSCs), and efficiently induced WJ-MSCs into neuron-like cells using a modified method. [Neurosci Lett] Abstract

Key Immune Cell Cytokines Have a Significant Role in the Expansion of CD26 Population of Cord Blood Mononuclear Cells
Researchers aimed to investigate the effect of key immune cell cytokines on CD26 expansion. They showed that utilization of interleukin (IL) 7 significantly improved the expression of total CD26+ cells and when either IL2 or IL15 were added to the culture, the expression also improved 2.5-fold. [Artif Cells Nanomed Biotechnol] Abstract

Umbilical Cord Blood Graft Engineering: Challenges and Opportunities
Scientists are entering a very exciting era in umbilical cord blood transplantation (UCBT), where many of the associated formidable challenges may become treatable by ex vivo graft manipulation and/or adoptive immunotherapy utilizing specific cellular products. [Bone Marrow Transplant] Abstract
