TOP STORY
Downregulation of Melanoma Cell Adhesion Molecule (MCAM/CD146) Accelerates Cellular Senescence in Human Umbilical Cord Blood-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Scientists investigated the surface markers of human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells associated with cellular senescence using fluorescence-activated cell sorting analysis and 242 cell surface-marker antibodies. [Stem Cells Transl Med] Abstract

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
25-Hydroxyvitamin D in Pregnancy and Genome Wide Cord Blood DNA Methylation in Two Pregnancy Cohorts (MoBa and ALSPAC).
Researchers investigated whether maternal mid-pregnancy 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations are associated with cord blood DNA methylation. [J Steroid Biochem Mol Biol] Abstract

Human Bone Marrow-Derived and Umbilical Cord-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells for Alleviating Neuropathic Pain in a Spinal Cord Injury Model
Investigators aimed to determine the effect of stem cells derived from bone marrow (BM-MSC) and umbilical cord (UC-MSC) on neuropathic pain relief. They showed that BM-MSC and UC-MSC transplantations alleviated the symptoms of neuropathic pain and resulted in subsequent motor recovery after spinal cord injuries. [Stem Cell Res Ther] Full Article

Comparing the Effects of MSCs and CD34+ Cell Therapy in a Rat Model of Myocardial Infarction
Investigators compared human umbilical cord blood (HUCB)-derived CD34+ and HUCB-derived MSCs for the repair of cardiac tissue by induction of the angiogenesis. [IUBMB Life] Abstract

Kinetics of Versican-Expressing Macrophages in Bone Marrow after Cord Blood Stem Cell Transplantation for Treatment of Acute Myelogenous Leukemia
The authors determined versican-producing cells in normocellular bone marrow and evaluated chronological alteration in the number of versican-producing macrophages in bone marrow of patients with acute myelogenous leukemia after cord blood stem cell transplantation. [J Clin Pathol] Full Article

Comparison of Capacities to Maintain Hematopoietic Stem Cells among Different Types of Stem Cells Derived from the Placenta and Umbilical Cord
Three types of stem cells, amnion epithelial stem cells, amnion mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), and Wharton’s jelly (WJ) MSCs, all of which can be isolated and cultured from the placenta amnion or umbilical cord WJ, were investigated for the expression of hematopoietic stem cell niche markers and for their capabilities to maintain hematopoietic stem cells when co-cultured with cord blood hematopoietic stem cells. [Regen Med] Full Article

Effects of IGF-1 on Neural Differentiation of Human Umbilical Cord Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) was tested to ameliorate umbilical cord derived mesenchymal stem cells neural differentiation. [Life Sci] Abstract

REVIEWS
A Rational Strategy for the Use of Amniotic Epithelial Stem Cell Therapy for Liver Diseases
The author provides an overview of the beneficial properties of human amniotic epithelial cells and proposes a rational strategy for translating placental stem cells toward clinical application for various liver diseases. [Stem Cells Transl Med] Abstract

Notch Signaling: Its Roles and Therapeutic Potential in Hematological Malignancies
The authors give a general description of the Notch signaling pathway, and its physiologic role in hematopoiesis. They review the role of aberrant Notch signaling in several hematological malignancies. [Oncotarget] Full Article
